TOURISM ECONOMIC IMPACT IN SALEM AREA INCREASES IN 2007

Tourism is big business in Salem and a vital economic generator, confirmed by a recently released study, Economic Impacts of Travel 1992-2007, Salem Oregon. According to Portland based market research firm Dean Runyan Associates, Salem’s visitor spending was $239 million in 2007 an increase of 7 percent. Results of visitor spending by commodity purchased are as follows:

Food & Beverage Services $100.3 million $ 41.2 million
Accommodations $ 48.7 million $ 30.1 million
Retail Sales $ 45.9 million $ 21.5 million
Arts, Entertainment & Recreation $131.1 million $ 20.3 million
Food Stores $ 38.1 million $ 14.0 million
     
Total Visitor Spending
$506.7 million** $238.6 million*

(Total Salem travel spending was $244.1 million, which includes Salem residents travel arrangements outbound. The $238.6 million is spending by visitors to Salem.)
